Lately I find myself unable to concentrate. I am easily distracted with things that really don’t matter to me. I am at a loss as to how to tackle tasks that I used to do on autopilot. I feel like I am in some sort of mental fog.
When I looked up brain fog online, this is what I found:
“Brain fog is typically rooted in a lifestyle that promotes hormonal imbalances and is exacerbated by stress.
So what is going on with me? How did I get here? Is this a sign I’m “getting older”? Is it due to my lifestyle or diet? Do I have too much stress in my life?
As I talked about this “condition” with others, I decided I am far from alone! Almost everyone I talked to said they too were experiencing some sort of “brain fog”. What could this mean?
Well, I’ve pondered on this for some time now and I believe it may be some sort of coping mechanism. Just roll with me for a minute…
The world has gone crazy! There is contention and strife almost everywhere you turn. Schedules are demanding. Down time is practically nonexistent. The price of goods and services is rising at a pace that is not consistent with wages (your dollar just doesn’t stretch far enough). Wholesome values and standards are being attacked like never before. So much is changing and happing at such an accelerated pace. Just writing about it makes me feel stressed.
Now think about what an animal does when it is overwhelmed/stressed/frightened – ie deer in the headlights. They freeze or they run. They seldom stay and fight. I think brain fog is way of coping with stress. It puts us in a stage of freeze or flight. It’s like the amygdala takes over and your energy just fogs to protect you.
Now the fun part about a blog is I can just share my thoughts! And that is exactly what this is. But as I have been working to “lift” my own brain fog, I feel strongly that clearing out my energy and changing my thought patterns is essential to “lifting” brain fog! I have to “release” the fear and overwhelm or it just won’t go away.
As you know, I can’t change the events happening around me, I can only change my response to them. And this is the key!
Of course, you need to take care of your physical body. You need rest and exercise and your body needs proper nutrition. But, your mind and your energy systems need to be cared for as well.
When considering your own brain fog, what has you feeing like hiding away? What has you wanting to just pretend like it didn’t or isn’t happening? What stresses you out and makes you want to run for cover? Could this be what is causing your brain fog? What could you do to see things differently? How could you respond differently to difficult situations you are facing?
I find this way of questioning and thinking differently has drastically improved my mental capacity! Could it work for you too??
